Doug Cannon - Taiwan
BACKGROUND Through Sunday school lessons and bedtime stories Doug Cannon learned about missionaries. "I thought numerous times that I would like to be a missionary, and tell people about Jesus who had never heard of Him," says Doug.As a senior in high school, Doug came to know Christ's Lordship in his life. He also committed himself to go wherever God wanted him to go, and do whatever He wanted him to do.
At Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Doug majored in civil engineering and in forestry. He also became active in Campus Crusade for Christ, Navigators and at the First Baptist Church of Fort Collins.
Doug then transferred to Gordon College, Wenham, Mass. After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Bible, he studied at Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary.
While in seminary, Doug ministered one summer in Taiwan as a Missionary Assistants Corps worker. After graduating with a master of divinity degree in missions, he was appointed in 1977 by CBFMS to serve in evangelism and church planting in Taiwan.
MINISTRY
After Doug arrived in Taiwan, he attended language school. He also helped CBFMS missionaries Stan and Ella Peach begin a new church in a suburb of Taipei. After two years, the Peaches retired and Doug became pastor of the church. When he returned to the United States for 'home assignment, a Chinese seminary student became pastor.
In Doug's second term, he worked with CBFMS missionaries Dave and Ruth Harrison, a few Chinese couples and young people to start another church in an industrial suburb of Taipei. After the Harrisons went on home assignment, Doug co-pastored the church with a Chinese seminary graduate. A year later Doug left to help begin a church in the suburb of Kaohsiung. This third church grew rapidly with a Chinese pastor and a team of five seminarians and five missionaries.
This last term Doug worked with a team of six Chinese and planted a church in another suburb of Taipei. Meeting in the home of Mark and Connie Ke, the Shihu church grew through home meetings and visitation. They saw many come to Christ and baptized a number of new believers. The church also purchased a building with the help of Great Cities PACT contributions. "It's been a joy to see over 50 people baptized through the ministry of the church, and see the congregation grow to 80," says Doug.
Doug also taught Introduction to Missions, the Epistles of Paul, and New Testament Survey at the Theological College in Hsilo. The college has 40 students, half men and, half women, who are eager to serve the Lord.
FIELD
Taiwan was formerly called Formosa which means "The Beautiful Isle," by the Portuguese. Heavily foliated with its humid sub-tropical climate, it rises over 13,000 feet from sea level along its beautiful eastern coast.
Taiwan has always been dominated by a foreign power: the Portuguese, the Dutch, the Japanese (1895-1949) and the mainland Nationalists (1949present). During recent years there has been a great upsurge of economic development, leaving most of Taiwan's population better off materially. Many are traveling and investing abroad. Most recently there has been a great deal of investment in China itself.
Because of the continual changee and modernization of Taiwan, many of the younger generation are reexamining their beliefs. Superstitions, ancestral practices, and the worship of idols are all up for review. There is receptivity to Christ among many youth, university students, and young urban families. More are coming to Christ and visiting the church than Christian workers have time to disciple. Christians need to be trained for ministry.
The CB association is part of the AD 2000 movement in Taiwan. They have a goal of going from 25 to 40 churches, and from a constituency of 2,000 to 8,000 by the year 2000.

Bo & Cynthia Horlen - Philippines
BACKGROUND God's passion for the lost as expressed in Jesus' parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost sons in Luke 15 captured Bo and Cynthia's hearts from 1969-1975 as Bo completed studies at Southwestern Bible College in Phoenix, Arizona, and Denver Seminary in Colorado. God's desire that none should perish motivated them i to become church planters in a ripe harvest field. The vision of planting 200 churches in the Philippines by 1981 shared by Bob Skivington at Trinity Baptist Church in 1974 focused God's direction.
The Horlens were appointed by CBInternational in 1975. After serving 10 years in Davao City and seeing 57 churches planted, Bo and Cynthia moved to Cebu City in 1986. Cebu is a tough Catholic stronghold where less than 2 percent of the people know the Lord personally.
MINISTRY
Among these resistant Cebuano hearts, Word of Life Church has begun to develop into a church planting center. Word of Life helped start New Life Community Church in Mandaue in 1994 and Island Life Church on Gilutongan island in 1995.
In 1994 and 1996, Pastor Lowell Tallo and Pastor Roy Verzosa graduated from Asian Theological Seminary in Manila and returned to provide leadership at Word of Life. Forty-seven members at Word of Life, New Life Community Church, and Island Life Church are being trained in ministries ranging from children's Bible classes to campus evangelism.
As the Horlens look to the future they would like to raise up teams to plant 10 more church planting centers in the Ilsprovinces of the central and eastern Visayan islands. These church planting centers would be vitally involved in planting churches in the 7,524 barangays (communities from 1,000 to 90,000 people) without a gospel witness.
FIELD
Filipinos have deeply held Catholic beliefs from 550 years of Spanish domination. Ninety-nine years of American influence has marked them with strong ambitions to educate their children. But in their heart of hearts they live in a clannish, communal society that is rooted in their Malayan values.
The Philippines has experienced dramatic economic growth under the leadership of President Fidel Ramos. Her national elections, scheduled for May 1998, are crucial in choosing the next set of political leaders to maintain her economic growth and political stability.
The 4.1 emigrant Filipino workers, from doctors to domestic helpers, offer a great opportunity to the Filipino church. She needs to orient and empower those who are faithful members to view themselves as dynamic witnesses for Christ. The growing economic power of Filipinos also needs to be released to send out hundreds of Filipino missionaries to unreached people groups. DAWN 2000 Philippines has a goal to send out 1,000 Filipino cross cultural missionaries by 2010.
